Appointment of Chief Diversity Officer and Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dyonne Bergeron as our next chief diversity officer and vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion. She brings to UCI more than two decades of public higher education leadership in DEI, academic affairs and student affairs.

Dr. Bergeron most recently served as the acting vice provost and associate vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion at the Boulder flagship campus of the University of Colorado. Among her accomplishments, she provided leadership and oversight for the Center for Inclusion and Social Change; created and headed the efforts of the staff and faculty DEI Inclusive Culture Team; and helped advance a range of campuswide policies, initiatives and strategies that promote diversity, equity and inclusion.

Before that, Dr. Bergeron was assistant vice chancellor for inclusion and student achievement and assistant vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Colorado Boulder; assistant dean and director of multicultural development at Florida Gulf Coast University; and in senior administrative positions at the University of South Florida, the University of Georgia and other public higher education institutions.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communication at Louisiana State University and master’s and doctoral degrees of education at the University of South Florida.

I am grateful to the search committee and its chair, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Willie L. Banks Jr., for their hard work in identifying and helping recruit this outstanding leader. A special note of thanks goes to Professor Rodrigo Lazo, who has so ably served as the interim vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion.

Dr. Bergeron will join UCI on July 3. I know you will join me in welcoming her.

Fiat Lux.

Chancellor Howard Gillman
