Campus Safety Action

Dear UCI Community,

Yesterday, a former UCI student was arraigned in Santa Ana on extortion and weapons charges and remains in custody.

I want to assure you that at no time was our campus under imminent threat. This arrest and arraignment are a result of the work of UCI Police, other federal and local authorities, and the UCI Consultation Team, which for some time has been actively addressing and monitoring the situation surrounding the individual. While many of our campus safety measures are not made public, you should rest assured that significant actions have taken place to protect the campus community.

UCI is fortunate to have a team of experts assembled to proactively address mental health issues, safety and security concerns, and the wellbeing of those impacted directly. I am grateful for the diligent efforts of UCI Police, the UCI Consultation Team, and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for ensuring the safety of our campus.
