First day of classes

Dear students,

Welcome to the start of fall quarter!

You have come to UCI because you want to do great things – to study, learn, create, and explore; to expand your horizons, understand yourself and the world, and grow to be the person you want to be, living the life you want to live. We are here to help you accomplish all this and more, to help you in every way we can, whether you are here on campus or living in your permanent residence.

Our exceptional faculty have devoted themselves to adapting their courses to the virtual environment and honing their remote instruction and student engagement skills. Our remarkable student affairs and graduate division staff have dedicated countless hours to creating and promoting a strong virtual community where you can connect in a meaningful way with your fellow students, your professors, and your campus organizations. And, while no one knows the future, we are actively planning your return to campus at the earliest possible time that the public health situation allows.

I know there are unique challenges to starting your studies with mostly remote instruction, and with having to forego many of the normal activities that make up the college experience. But I also know that you will rise to the occasion, support each other, and show gratitude to everyone who is working so hard to allow us to adapt and persist. And you will find ways, consistent with health and safety, to ensure that you experience and express the fun, excitement, and adventure of your time with us. That has always been the Anteater way.

Again, welcome to the first day of classes. Best wishes for a successful fall quarter.

Fiat Lux,

Chancellor Howard Gillman
