Susan and Henry Samueli Commit $200 Million to Name College of Health Sciences

To the Anteater community:

I am deeply humbled and honored to share that dear friends of UCI, Susan and Henry Samueli, have made a tremendous commitment of $200 million to name the College of Health Sciences.

The Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences will be the first university-based health sciences enterprise to incorporate integrative health research, teaching and patient care across its schools and programs. This strategy is inclusive of all evidence-based approaches to treating disease and promoting wellness, including conventional medicine, lifestyle and preventive medicine, alternative and complementary modalities, and the many disciplines of population health sciences.

As healthcare continues to rapidly change, moving from treating a single ailment to addressing the whole person and total community, there is a pressing need for doctors and other healthcare professionals to work together to provide comprehensive care, promote lasting wellness and enhance quality of life. Our unique college structure allows us to develop innovative research initiatives, educational programs, clinical interventions and public outreach efforts in a way that reimagines how best to advance health and well-being.

The Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences will encompass the new Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, the School of Medicine, the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy (now the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences) and the School of Population Health (now the Program in Public Health). Funds will support construction of a state-of-the-art building, cutting-edge technology and lab equipment, endowed chairs, graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholarships, and clinical and programmatic resources that will expand and revolutionize UCI’s educational offerings. With integrative health at the core of its mission, the college will focus on preparing the next generation of healthcare providers to administer world-class, forward-thinking care to patients of all backgrounds.

And this is only the beginning. This gift will set in motion a larger effort to transform the health sciences portion of the campus beyond the new college building and the homes for the affiliated programs. As we prepare for our next campaign, we will be working with all of you – our faculty, students, staff, partners and supporters – to see how we can best take advantage of the momentum associated with this historic and transformational moment.

The Samuelis’ philanthropy enables UCI to make major strides in every pillar of our strategic plan: achieving growth that makes a difference, developing our first-in-class status, fostering relationships with great partners, and forging new paths for our brilliant future. UCI is on the threshold of becoming a sought-out global destination for aspiring doctors and other health professionals and a leading source of innovative research for decades to come.

I encourage each of you to learn more about this unprecedented, landmark gift and the future of UCI’s flourishing health enterprise by reading our news release here.

Please join me in expressing our utmost gratitude to Susan and Henry Samueli for their continued extraordinary generosity and unwavering support of our institution.

Fiat Lux,

Chancellor Howard Gillman
