UCI Named Hispanic-Serving Institution for 2017-18

To the Anteater community:

We recently received some terrific news from the U.S. Department of Education. UCI has been named a Hispanic-serving institution for 2017-18, meaning that fully one-quarter of our undergraduate student body identifies as Latino and that half of all students receive financial aid. The designation builds on UCI’s recognition earlier this year as an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution, demonstrating the university’s dedication to providing a world-class education to every qualified student. UCI is only the second member of the prestigious Association of American Universities to gain HSI and AANAPISI eligibility.

These classifications create opportunities to access federal grants designed to support students. If funding remains strong, the grants could be used for laboratory or teaching equipment, construction of instructional facilities, faculty development, academic tutoring or counseling programs, endowments or student support services. We are tremendously proud to hold these titles, not only for the potential funding, but because they validate our commitment to diversity and align with our aspiration to be a national leader and global model of inclusive excellence. These programs enable UCI to serve as an engine of social mobility for all Californians and empower us to create a more brilliant future for everyone in the state.
