Sunday morning many of us awoke to the horrific news of yet another attack on American civilians, this time at an LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families and friends, and all of the people affected by this tragic event.
Our hearts are heavy as we grapple with the hatred, violence and intolerance that exists in our world.
Many times during this academic year I have emphasized the importance of communicating with one another in a way that respects each of our unique personal stories, backgrounds, faiths, traditions and values. We are a vibrant community of Anteaters, full of optimism and a genuine desire to make the world a better place. Do not be hardened by this terrible news, but instead, be a beacon of hope for the future.
As I said at our commencement ceremonies this past weekend, the world needs people who orient themselves toward their fellow human beings – compassionate people who are empowered to push the world a little more toward light. Let us commit ourselves to this vision and stand united against the darkness of animosity and violence.
Let us be the light.
Fiat Lux,
Chancellor Howard Gillman
