Terrorist Attack in Paris

To the Anteater community:

Friday evening we witnessed yet another horrific and savage attack on innocent and unsuspecting civilians in Paris. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families and friends, and all the people of France.

Thankfully, none of our Anteater students and faculty currently in France was swept up in this tragedy. Our neighbor institution CSU Long Beach was not so fortunate. We offer our condolences to the family and friends of Nohemi Gonzalez, whose young and promising life was so sadly cut short. We join them in mourning her loss.

As I look from my office out to the flagpoles where our flags fly at half-mast, it is my most fervent hope that this is the last message like this I shall ever have to write. Our world already suffers so much. UCI is a place of learning, where we take on the great challenges facing humanity. We are a community where people of many different faiths, traditions, and backgrounds can come together, exchange ideas, and work alongside one another for the common benefit of humankind. Let us recommit ourselves to this hopeful, optimistic vision for our future, and stand united against the darkness of hatred and violence.

Fiat lux,

Chancellor Howard Gillman
