Incident at UC Merced

To the Anteater community:

Early this morning our sister campus UC Merced was the scene of a violent and horrific incident. Four people were stabbed, apparently at random, before the assailant was stopped by campus police. Thankfully, none of the injuries were life-threatening, and all four victims, two students, a staff member, and a campus contractor, are expected to recover fully. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them, their families, and the entire UC Merced community.

At this time it is not known what triggered the attack. Details will emerge in the next few days as the police and other authorities investigate the incident.

No campus is free from the possibility of a random attack, but I want you to know that your safety, and that of every person who visits, lives, studies, or works on campus, is of primary importance to us. Our campus police are on routine active patrol across campus, keeping an eye out for possible problems. If you see anything that is suspicious or troubling, please notify our police by stopping a passing officer or by calling 911.

If you have not already done so, be sure to sign up at http://www.oit.uci.edu/zotalert/ to receive ZOTalerts on your phone or other mobile device. This is the fastest and surest way to learn of any problem on campus.
