Reaffirmation of UC Anti-Discrimination Policy
To the Anteater Community:
With the start of the new calendar year, it is essential that we reaffirm our commitment to an environment free of discrimination and harassment. Together, we must work to sustain a climate that respects civil rights, values diversity, and fosters inclusion for everyone at UC Irvine in their research, career, patient care, and educational pursuits.
California has strong civil rights laws and UC has a robust Anti-Discrimination Policy that prohibits discrimination or harassment based on protected identity for all UC community members. Protected identities include race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender expression, gender identity, gender transition status, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, medical condition (cancer-related or genetic characteristics), genetic information (including family medical history), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship, or service in the uniformed services, including protected veterans. UCI takes allegations of discrimination seriously and will take appropriate action to stop, prevent, and address conduct that violates University policy.
All university employees (“Responsible Employees”) must make a report to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (OEOD) when they learn through the course of their employment of an incident of discrimination, harassment, or retaliation, involving students. Supervisors, faculty, Human Resources, and UCIPD have a further duty to report incidents involving any person affiliated with the university, including patients at UCI Health. Reporting to OEOD ensures a consistent institutional response and that those impacted can learn about their rights, options, and resources.
For any questions on the policy, to make a report, or request a training on the policy, please contact oeod@uci.edu or (949) 824-5594.
It is everyone’s responsibility to maintain a discrimination-free community at UCI. Join me in this commitment.
