Appointment of Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs

I am delighted to announce that Steve Goldstein, M.D., Ph.D., a nationally renowned pediatric cardiologist and academic leader, has agreed to serve as our next vice chancellor for health affairs. After a robust national search, he quickly emerged as the consensus No. 1 choice to lead our integrated health sciences education and research efforts.

Dr. Goldstein is currently dean and chief diversity officer at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, which under his leadership introduced a six-year strategic and financial plan; increased applications by 30 percent; established new academic and clinical programs; recruited outstanding chairs, directors and vice deans; redesigned the clinical trials operation; and received a full eight-year reaccreditation. Prior to that, he was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Brandeis University; chair of pediatrics, founding physician-in-chief of Comer Children’s Hospital and founding director of two biomedical research institutes at the University of Chicago; and professor and founder of the Section of Developmental Biology and Biophysics at Yale University.

An alumnus of Brandeis University, Dr. Goldstein earned an M.D. and a Ph.D. in immunology at Harvard University. His research interests include ion channels and how they function in disease and health. A fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, he received the prestigious E. Mead Johnson Award from the Society for Pediatric Research in 2001 for his research contributions. He has served as a scientific adviser to the National Institutes of Health on nanomedicine; has been vice chair of the National Science Foundation Biological Sciences Advisory Committee; and is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges steering committee for the Group on Diversity and Inclusion.

I am grateful to the search committee and its chair, Distinguished Professor Kyriacos Athanasiou, for their hard work in identifying and helping recruit such an outstanding leader in healthcare education and delivery. I also thank Dr. Alan Goldin for his tremendous service to the university and its faculty and students as our interim vice chancellor for health affairs.

Dr. Goldstein brings to UCI 30 years of experience in health sciences research, medical education and higher education administration. We all look forward to his joining us in February 2019.
