Chancellor's Distinguished Fellows Series Returns with Magic Johnson

I am delighted to announce the revival of a revered campus program: The UCI Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellows Series.

Launched in 1999 by then-Chancellor Ralph Cicerone, the series brings to campus eminent scholars and public figures who are active change-makers and leaders in today’s world. These luminaries share their insights, expertise and ideas at on-campus lectures and seminars open to the public and UCI faculty, staff and students.

The series will re-launch Monday, May 11, with Earvin “Magic” Johnson. He will engage the audience in a unique conversational format moderated by School of Social Ecology Dean Valerie Jenness.

Johnson, a five-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the nation. His philanthropic organization, the Magic Johnson Foundation, operates five HIV/AIDS clinics and hosts awareness and prevention programs throughout the country. It also runs the Michaels Scholarship Program that provides students from underserved communities with funds to attend college. Johnson is a tireless advocate for disadvantaged youth, a forceful supporter of urban communities and a man who actively helps young people obtain their educational goals. In addition to his philanthropic calling, Johnson is co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Sparks.
