Chancellor Gillman speaking at OC Forum

Chancellor Gillman addressed the OC Forum on October 17, 2018. The OC Forum is a nonpartisan current affairs organization that hosts prominent, knowledgeable speakers on public policy and other critical issues. In his remarks, the chancellor spoke about the First Amendment right of free speech, especially as it pertains to college campuses. Drawing upon examples of events at UCI and other universities, he outlined the constitutional limits on free speech and stressed that it benefits students, and society as a whole, if speakers are allowed to express their viewpoints, however unpopular. He summarized his remarks by citing former UC President Clark Kerr’s famous maxim that “the university is not engaged in making ideas safe for students. It is engaged in making students safe for ideas.”
