Chancellor Gillman Chairs Advisory Board on Free Speech, Civic Engagement
Oct. 26, 2017
Chancellor Gillman was named co-chair of the advisory board of UC’s new National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement. He shares the appointment with former UCI School of Law dean Erwin Chemerinsky. The duo co-authored a book, Free Speech on Campus, which was published in September 2017.
The advisory board comprises notable influencers including former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, former U.S. Secretary of Education John King, Facebook Director of Communications Anne Kornblut, UCLA law student Avi Oved, New York Times columnist Bret Stephens, and University of Chicago Law School Professor Geoffrey R. Stone.
The UC National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement will explore how the fundamental democratic principles of free speech and civic engagement must adapt to the challenges and opportunities of modern society.
“The creation of this center comes at a critical time, not only for higher education, but for our country as a whole,” Gillman said. “Through our research and years of teaching in this area, Erwin and I have seen the growing imperative to improve understanding of free speech issues. That’s why this center is such an exciting development.”
