State Assemblyman Honors Chancellor Gillman for Campus Free Speech Advocacy
Sept. 20, 2017
Chancellor Howard Gillman with California State Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-6th assembly district)
Free speech was the day’s topic in Sacramento, as UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman met with California State Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-6th assembly district) to discuss the hot-button campus topic and to receive a framed copy of Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 21. The resolution, which passed unanimously on July 17, urges all state colleges and universities to adopt free speech statements consistent with the principles articulated by Chancellor Gillman in his 2016 statement on free speech and academic freedom. The chancellor is a leading constitutional scholar widely known for his reasoned analysis and advocacy of free speech. This month, Free Speech on Campus, a book he co-authored with former UCI law school dean Erwin Chemerinsky, was published this month by Yale University Press. Gillman discussed his book and campus free speech issues in a recent UCI website feature.
