Chancellor Gillman Celebrates $5 Million Award with Santa Ana Partnership
Sept. 10, 2015
Chancellor Howard Gillman joined leaders of the Santa Ana Partnership (UCI, the Santa Ana Unified School District, Santa Ana College and California State University, Fullerton) on September 10 to celebrate the historic launch of the Award for Innovation in Higher Education in Orange County.
In March, the California Department of Finance and Governor Brown awarded the Santa Ana Partnership a $5 million grant for innovation and excellence in higher education. The award will help fund the partnership’s initiative to increase access to higher education in lower-income communities.
UCI received a $1 million endowment from the award, which the university will match, to underwrite scholarships for eligible graduates of the Santa Ana Unified School District who enroll at UCI as freshmen or as transfer students from Santa Ana College. The first scholarships will be awarded in fall 2016.
“This important partnership reaffirms our commitment to providing a world-class education to all of California's most promising young people,” Chancellor Gillman said. “Combining academic excellence with meaningful access is the great challenge of American higher education, and through programs such as these we will hope to be an example to others.”
