Yesterday, the Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) wrote to the campus community, outlining critical steps toward community-focused policing. I am writing to underscore my full support for these efforts and to put their efforts in the larger context of our whole university response to the long-overdue national reckoning that we have witnessed since the horrific, brutal, racist killing of George Floyd.

I am delighted to announce that this afternoon the University of California Board of Regents voted to establish the UCI School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, elevating the program started in 2006 to full school status. It is only the third school of its type in the UC system.

We watched with shock and horror the video of a white policeman callously, even casually, kneeling on the neck of an unarmed and unresisting black man until that man was dead, while other policemen stood by and watched. This brutal and racist act was like something out of Mississippi during Jim Crow, out of the past we don’t acknowledge enough, but it wasn’t. It is our reality, in the here and now, a reality that reflects the harsh, brutal, terrible, ongoing legacy of America’s original sin.
