Erin Gruwell is the Founder and Executive Director of the Freedom Writers Foundation, a nonprofit organization which founded in 1997. The foundation positively affects communities by decreasing high school dropout rates through the replication and enhancement of the Freedom Writers Method. The organization's overall purpose is to create opportunities for students to reach their full academic potential and aspire to higher education. The foundation works to publicly and systematically promote an educational philosophy that values, upholds, and honors diversity while inspiring students to realize their roles as vital members of their communities.
Gruwell's book, Dear Freedom Writer, entails stories of the next generation of Freedom Writers sharing their struggles with abuse, racism, discrimination, poverty, mental health, imposed borders, LGBTQIA+ identity, and police violence. Each story is answered with a letter of advice from an original Freedom Writer with an emphasis of honesty coming from firsthand experience of the same issues.
