Sgt. Eladio Acuna was born in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico and migrated to Los Angeles, California in 1971. He attended UC Irvine, studying Humanities, Bilingual Education, and Biological Sciences. He began his career at UCIPD in 1982, when he was hired as a Community Service Officer and served as the first UCI police Department Vehicle Maintenance worker. Eladio became a career employee in 1986 when he transferred to the UCI Medical Center and worked for three years as a Public Service Officer. Additionally, he was an EMT and volunteered in several hospital emergency rooms. Eladio was promoted to Police Officer, focused on creating a bridge between the UCIPD and the community through developing ties between student groups and staff members, working closely with other officers in developing safety plans for ESL and International Students, assisting with faculty and staff development programs, and mentoring incoming freshmen. Eladio later became a Corporal and was responsible for supervising the graveyard shift, the CSO program (comprising 100+ student workers), and Special Events (Regents meetings, concerts, dances, speakers, safety presentations for the community, etc.). He was promoted to Sergeant in 1996 and worked in the patrol division, developing the “ADOPT A Zone” program which later became “UCI Zone Policing.” During his career, Eladio has served in more than a dozen community programs, including Orientation and Professional Training Program with OEOD, Japanese International Police Program, RAD, radkids, SAAS Outreach Program, ESL/International Students Safety Presentation Programs, Vista del Campo – Liaison, Career Day – Dale Jr. High Career day, Preventing Workplace Violence, Active Shooter / Critical Incident Response Plans, Special Events Sergeant, and FTO Sergeant. Currently, Eladio works as the day watch patrol supervisor and is responsible for the Bicycle Patrol Unit, Bicycle Education and Enforcement Program, System-wide Response Team, and System-wide Mutual Aids. In total, Eladio has served as a career employee with the UCI Police Department for over 32 years.
