Responses to CACS Question – July 2012

What does UCI do well in regard to staff?

Thank you for your input to our question, What does UCI do well with regard to staff? The common themes of the feedback we received to this question were: acknowledgement, appreciation, recognition, encouragement, staff development and training, benefits, wellness, work/life balance, staff incentive programs, perks and effective communication.

The number one thing that UCI does well regarding staff is providing great encouragement. In the School of Medicine there is a spirit of camaraderie, helpfulness, and big encouragement. Recognition of and appreciation for hard work and great ideas are hallmarks of the School of Medicine.

Recognition of staff's relationship in building the infrastructure of the university by providing support to students and faculty. Creating themes that are based on team effort. Feeling respected in an environment of diversity and, feeling apart of the dream in support of Higher education and research endeavors.

UCI stands alone with regard to the amount of programs, training, opportunities and fun events available to their staff, such as their Effective Supervision Training, Career Enhancement Program, Education and Enrichment Lunchtime Series, Excellence in Leadership Program, Worklife & Wellness Program, Be Smart About Safety Program, Employment Opportunities, Employee Assistance Program, Sittercity, Staff Recognition programs and fun events like the Annual All Staff Picnic and Staff Pancake Breakfast.

The UC Learning Center offers really helpful workshops and trainings for staff. Hosting the annual staff recognition ceremony is something else that UCI does for the staff. It demonstrates the campus's appreciation of and commitment to the staff, which is especially needed during these trying times in higher education.

UCI offers well-rounded opportunities that are economical (because they are free) and convenient. UCI genuinely cares for their staff and stands behind their professional development and personal well-being.

UCI is a fantastic place to work. Even in tough economic times, I feel UCI does everything it possibly can to reduce the negative impact on its employees. I love coming to work every day because UCI's employees, students and faculty are motivated to make UCI one of the best campuses in the UC system.

Provides a safe environment that is like a family. Staff that have been here for over 10 years feel a sense of pride in "belonging" to the UCI Family.

The campus in general provides the staff a vibrant environment in which to work. The life outside of the office provides staff the options to attend lectures, library privileges, participate in campus activities, and interact with students. All of these combined makes UC Irvine a wonderful place to work.

Systemwide, the range of employment benefits offered to staff is excellent.

Now that I am close to retiring, I realize that UCI has a Retiree Center that is going to be a great help by sponsoring my email, with useful free programs, keeping me in touch with the campus I have served for so long. That shows me a UCI commitment to staff that reaches forward.

Communication – staff are well informed of services, resources available to them.

Many things, including: Providing a good benefits package with many options and reasonable prices; a number of venues, like this, for staff to express ideas/concerns; health related programs – step up UCI, EAP, etc.; training in many topics and generally a great web of support for questions one may have while doing their work (Accounting, Computing, etc.); access to information on things going on on campus and often discounted tickets; staff picnic, time off to vote, time off for annual health fair – the university is good at making us feel like a valued part of it and recognizing that we are people, too. The university really strives to create a good environment.

Work/life balance (leave policies, EAP, children's activities, cultural events) Health living encouragement (Health Ed and Campus Rec activities) Generous leave. Opportunities for forums with administration – staff assembly sponsored, Meals with Mike, etc. Rich and stimulating campus environment. Leadership awards, training in business processes, MSAP, BOI, etc.

There are so many resources and opportunities available for staff, be it conferences & fairs, the EAP program/resources, summer staff volleyball, the staff picnic, or the discounts that are available through affiliates.
