Introducing Chancellor Gillman

Full Introduction

Howard Gillman, Ph.D., became UCI’s sixth chancellor in September 2014, after previously serving as provost and executive vice chancellor.

An award-winning scholar and teacher, he has academic appointments in the departments of law, political science, and history. Among his books are The Constitution Besieged: The Rise and Demise of Lochner Era Police Powers JurisprudenceThe Votes That Counted: How the Court Decided the 2000 Presidential Election, and American Constitutionalism. He has also co-edited two other volumes and authored more than 40 articles and book chapters. He has received many awards for his scholarship, and for teaching excellence and dedication to students.

As chancellor Dr. Gillman oversees Orange County’s only AAU research university, with more than 33,000 students, 1200 faculty, 10,000 staff, and an annual economic impact of $5 billion. Ranked #9 among national public research universities according to U.S. News and World Report, UCI received more than 100,000 applications from prospective students for fall 2017.  It was recently designated by the New York Times as the #1 “top college doing the most for low-income students” and has been named a top 10 "Cool School" by Sierra magazine for seven consecutive years.

Prior to arriving at UCI, Dr. Gillman was a professor of political science, history, and law at the University of Southern California. From 2007 to 2012, he served as dean of the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

A native of Southern California, Dr. Gillman grew up in North Hollywood and was a first-generation college student. He earned bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in political science at UCLA.
